Town Records of DeKalb Ill page 272, 1864

This indenture made and entered into on the 8th day of August A.D. 1864 by and between David Price, Overseer of the Poor of the town of DeKalb in the county of DeKalb and state of Illinois for the year of 1864 of the first part and Charles C. Wright of the said town of the second part witnesseth.

Whereas it hath been made to appear to said overseer of the poor that Emma Smith is a minor child of poor parents who have become chartable to said town as having a lawful settlement, therefore the said overseer of the poor by virtue and conformity to the law, in such cases made and provided hath bound the said Emma Smith who is now of the age of one year the 6th day of July last to the said Chas. C. Wright from the date hereof until the said Emma Smith shall have attained the age of eighteen years which will be on the 6th day of July 1881, and it is hereby agreed and understood that the said Emma Smith during the said term and shall obey all his lawful and seasonable commands.  That she will not willingly do or suffer to be done any harm or damage to the goods property or interests of the said master; that she will not without leave absent herself from the service of his said master but that she shall in all things during the said term demand and behave herself as a good and faithful child to her said master.  And the said Charles C. Wright doth on his part hereby agree in consideration of the undertaking and teaching aforesaid to each and instruct that said Emma Smith in the various branches of the English language
