Town Records of DeKalb Ill page 274, 1864

This indenture made and entered into on the 8th day of August A.D. 1864 by and between David Price Overseer of the Poor of the Town of DeKalb in the County of DeKalb and State of Illinois for the year A.D. 1864 of the first part Thos. J. Groves of said town of the second part witnesseth.  When as it hath been made to appear to said Overseer of the Poor that Edward Smith is a minor child of poor parents who have become chargeable to said To as having a lawful settlement there in therefore the said Overseer of the Poor by virtue and conformity to the law in such cases made and provided hath bound the said Edward Smith who is now of the age of three years the eight day of March to the said Thos. J. Graves from the date hereof until the said Edward Smith shall have attained the age of twenty one years which will be on the 8th day of March 1883.

And it is hereby agreed and understood that the said Edward Smith during the said term and shall obey all his lawful and reasonable commands that he will not willing do or suffer to be done any harm or damage to the goods property or interest of the said master; that he will not without leave absent himself from the service of his said master but that he shall in all things during the said term demean and behave himself as a good and faithful child to his said master and the said Thos. J. Groves doth on his part hereby agree in consideration of the undertaking and bonding afore said to teach and instruct the said
